Manakala, getah yang terdapat pada daun ketum tersebut mampu mendatangkan kerosakan pada sistem saraf tubuh badanmanusia. Walau bagaimanapun, daun ketum juga telah lama digunakan sebagai bahan perubatan tradisional sebagai minuman pemulih tenaga bagi wanita yang lepas bersalin sertasebagaipenawarterhadapbeberapajenispenyakitringan.Penyalahgunaaniniakan mengakibatkan kesan buruk, seperti penyusutan berat badan, masalah tidur, anoreksia, penghidratan, sembelit, kesan lebam dan terbakar pada muka, kemurungan, masalah sistem saraf, serta masalahjantung. Langkah pembendungan penyalahgunaan daun ketum perlu dipertimbangkan, misalnya proses pendidikan dengan memberikan kesedaran kepada orang ramai tentang bahaya jika menyalahgunakan daun ketum tersebut. Manakala, pemantauan untuk mencegah penyalahgunaan perlu dibuat oleh pihak berkuasa tempatan.
