Daun ketum yang digunakan, terutama dalam kalangan mereka yang sudah ketagih, seperti ketagihan dadah. Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan (AADK), Negeri Kedah telah mengesanpenjualandaunketumdalambentuk“snek”.Prosespenyediaansnekiniamat mudah,iaitusamasepertiprosespembuatankerepekataurempeyekyangdicelupdengan tepung, kemudian digoreng hingga rangup sebelum dimakan seperti snekbiasa. Penyalahgunaan daun ketum mampu memudaratkan penggunanya, terutama kepadagolonganmudayangmudahketagih.Berdasarkankajian,airrebusandaunketum dikatakan mampu menjejaskan sistem saraf pusat manusia dan menyebabkan ketagihan melampaukeranamengandungi“mitraginin”yangmempunyaitahapketagihannyasama dengan dadah jenis morfin. Manakala, getah yang terdapat pada daun ketum tersebut mampu mendatangkan kerosakan pada sistem saraf tubuh badanmanusia. Walau bagaimanapun, daun ketum juga telah lama digunakan sebagai bahan perubatan tradisional sebagai minuman pemulih tenaga bagi wanita yang lepas bersalin sertasebagaipenawarterhadapbeberapajenispenyakitringan.Penyalahgunaaniniakan mengakibatkan kesan buruk, seperti penyusutan berat badan, masalah tidur, anoreksia, penghidratan, sembelit, kesan lebam dan terbakar pada muka, kemurungan, masalah sistem saraf, serta masalahjantung. Langkah pembendungan penyalahgunaan daun ketum perlu dipertimbangkan, misalnya proses pendidikan dengan memberikan kesedaran kepada orang ramai tentang bahaya jika menyalahgunakan daun ketum tersebut. Manakala, pemantauan untuk mencegah penyalahgunaan perlu dibuat oleh pihak berkuasa tempatan. Dengan itu, undang-undang sedia ada yang termaktub di bawah seksyen 30(3) Akta 366, mereka yangmemilikiairdandaunketumbolehdikenakantindakanhukumanmengikutseksyen 30(5)aktayangsamadengandendatidakmelebihiRM10ribuatautidakmelebihiempat tahun penjara atau kedua-duanya.
